The specimen 1922 half pennies were among the last specimen half pennies struck by the Sydney mint, 2nd only to the 1926 issues. They feature an even surface, similar to the 1919 and 1920 specimen half penny, unlike the cartwheel reflective surface of the business strike . This should not be confused with a dulled business strike which would show increased unevenness at the microscopic level and will almost certainly be paired with other imperfections from circulation. Another key characteristic to the speci men strike is the sharp obverse rim. While some normal business strikes exhibit razor sharp details, which may be made increasingly confusing when paired with often seen mark-free surfaces from the more careful Sydney mint process, these tend to have a flattened obverse rim, atypical of the specimen strike.
It is unknown how many specimen s were produced at the Sydney mint in 1922 but a figure of about 5-7 would be consistent with other years that the Sydney mint produced specimens.
